The client had a vision to bring the ‘big city coffee’ vibe to Nelson. Their desire was to attract customers not only for the coffee but for the décor and atmosphere too. The brief was to create a contemporary, ‘on-trend’ Scandinavian look with the use of timber and a twist of black to add punch.

We wanted a simple look with clean lines and considered small, intricate details that not only those with a trained eye might notice such as negative detailing under the benchtop, minimal overhangs and a combination of materials practical for a commercial environment.

A challenge to this project was the set floorplan. We had specific needs and a lot of appliances to consider and fit within the confined space. This involved a lot of research, thought and planning so the space was functional and fluid.

Another challenge was finding a benchtop that wasn’t stainless steel and could still withstand high usage without major wear and tear. Fenix was the perfect solution due to its Nano-tech properties and was a very new product on the market at the time.

Achieving a Scandinavian look on a budget was another obstacle. We wanted the timber look so we looked at alternative materials to match in with the American Oak used on the bar top, menu board and ambient counter. We complimented this with the use of Prime Melamine Sovereign Oak.
