Details

“Dark, textured and interesting with great storage and easy flow” was the brief I received from my clients. In addition, the expansive view from the window needed to bring in plenty of natural light and enhance the whole space bringing the outdoors in.

To achieve this, we first lowered the window to bench height, so the benchtop formed the window reveal – this meant that maximum height was attained for both optimal natural light AND the great view!
Adding a mix of rich timber colour board combined with the tactile velvet of the Soft Touch, functional and robust stone and industrial chic splashback proved to be a warm yet sophisticated palate that was so much fun to layer together and this was enhanced by using dark carcass board throughout.

We also extended the dark shelving into the walk-in pantry for continuity and to further develop the very ‘un-white’ theme! The black ‘block’ island was finished with black powder coated ‘flush mount’ handles to complete the solid look.

The challenges were to ensure that in a quite small footprint with several different materials, that the balance and overall look was cohesive and didn’t appear too busy or overdone. While every material was important and valid, the details and layers needed to be considered and restrained. We also had a small setback with a deleted board colour meaning a bit of a rethink (and some gentle persuasion) which ultimately gave the clients a BETTER result that they were subsequently delighted with!
