Scandinavian Elegance

In response to our client’s desire for a “beautiful family space”, we embarked on a transformative journey, breathing new life into a dated, pokey, 80’s brick veneer home. The result is a stunning Scandinavian-inspired kitchen design characterized by the warmth of natural timber and clean, tactile surfaces.
Collaborating closely with both the client and an architect, we set out to redefine every facet of this space. Walls vanished, and in their absence, a scullery and fridge nook emerged, alongside a kitchen that now beckons with open arms.
The island needed to be large, focal, and functional. To fit 6 people around the island, we decided to accentuate the cantilever end and create an angle which acknowledges the back wall of the kitchen.
The curvature of the island’s overhang was achieved through a meticulous process, ensuring a seamless transition from benchtop to end point. Crafting these curves presented unique challenges, particularly with the acrylic and timber veneer panels. The acrylic wasn’t available to purchase in loose leaf, so we had to skim the 18mm boards down in thickness so we could confidently curve to the required radius. We used the same technique for the curved timber veneer panels. Hand selected Timber Veneer leaf was applied under the curved panels to create a seamless curve. Corian benchtops were the perfect solution as we could thicken up the benchtop and still maintain the curved feature.
Lastly, we curved veneer under the island, and then applied a solid American Oak timber batten detail. We then took this across to the scullery wall and clad the wall with veneer and battens to replicate the island detail, infusing the room with a sense of continuity and elevating the perceived ceiling height.
Hafele Flexi LED lights were used to create ambient lighting under the overhead joinery & under the island as a feature lighting and was perfectly integrated around the curve of the island.
